Check out the New Tonics We had a staff meeting (all 3 of us) to taste these new tonics with the big brands, as well as another older one we found (White Rock). All 3 of us thought that the Fever Tree and the White Rock were better than Schweppes and Canada Dry. White Rock had more citrus notes, Fever Tree had more complexity and spices. The Stirrings tonic was love-it or hate-it. One of us loved it, one thought it was too sweet, and one thought it was good on its own but not good with No. 6 (too overpowering). Click here for a chart summarizing our tasting notes on the tonics alone, with North Shore Vodka and with Distiller's Gin No. 6, as well as info on where to find them. |

Trivia Bits When working on the Aviation recipe, we discovered that there are big variations in the flavor and sweetness of maraschino liqueurs. Seek out the Luxardo if you try ours, or adjust proportions based on taste. The Aviation cocktail was first written about in 1916, but was popularized in the 1930's along with the rise of aviation. It was one of the classic cocktails of its time.* (*Source - Jonathan Forester on AOL Slashfood Blog, 1/07)

Each of us had our favorites, but the White Rock and Fever Tree scored well with all of us. We’d definitely recommend conducting your own tonic experiments – you might be surprised by the results!
You can find Schweppes and Canada Dry just about anywhere. We found the other ones at:
Fever Tree – Schaefer’s in Skokie. Right now Schaefer’s has an exclusive on them, so you have to go there or call them (they deliver and they ship). Fever Tree makes the best Bitter Lemon we’ve ever had, and their Ginger Ale is quite interesting – rich, true ginger flavor.
Stirrings – The Goddess & Grocer in Bucktown/Chicago (1646 N. Damen). They are starting to appear at more places, including finer liquor stores, so ask around.
White Rock – Olivia’s Market in Bucktown/Chicago (2014 W. Wabansia). We have seen it a few other places, but its kinda hard to find (worth seeking out though).
Enjoy the rest of G&T (and V&T) season, and please tell us about your favorite tonic (and please let us know if you see Q Tonic anywhere)!
